Red Velvet Mites or Rain Bugs (Trombidiidae) are arachnids found in soil litter and known for their bright red color. They won’t bite you, but they can be a nuisance, as they actively crawl around as active predators looking for aphids, ants and other critters to eat.

They are beneficial, however, and will even eat bed bugs! They are very small, usually around .16 inch in length and can be seen everywhere after all this rain.

Remember these little “red bugs” will not bite or sting you and are extremely important in the environment.

If they start showing up in your home looking around for bugs to eat, just sweep them up and return them outside.
